Dear friends, I hope you and your loved ones are well, and that you are staying safe by staying home. Last week I was a little too off-center to write a blog, but this week I’m feeling more grounded. A wonderful energy healer friend did a mid-conversation energy healing for me over the phone, and it helped a lot. (Thanks, Peggy!). I encourage you to stay in touch with people like her, people who help you feel more centered and calm.
These are anxious times for many of us. Stress and anxiety disrupt the rhythm and flow of body and energy, making our energy spiky and chaotic. (Think of choppy water, compared to smooth water.)
The following meridian-based technique can help you calm and smooth your energy when you’re feeling edgy. This is good for your immune system, too. It’s super-easy, and there’s no down-side to giving it a try.
The Triple Warmer (also called Triple Heater and Triple Burner) meridian governs our stress response, among other things. In our culture, Triple Warmer works overtime for most people even under normal circumstances–and these are not normal circumstances.
You can calm it down, reducing your sense of anxiety, by tapping, rubbing, or holding the third point on the meridian (TW3). This point is on the back of your hand.
To find TW3, make a gentle fist. Between the bones in the hand that lead to the fourth and fifth fingers (ring and pinky fingers), you will see a slight indentation or depression (just below the knuckle-bones). This is the spot.
Tap, rub, or press this spot for about a minute. Breathe deeply (but comfortably) while you do this — nice, full breaths all the way down into the lower third of your lungs.
Then switch hands, continuing to belly breathe.
That’s it. Just don’t try to do this while you drive. (But you knew that.)
It may take 20 minutes or so for the stress hormones to clear from your body (though it works very quickly for me).
I send you wishes for a peaceful and harmonious time of rest and reflection, along with hopes that this moment of energetic upheaval may serve as an opening for the transformation that our world so badly needs.

Normally Liz works helping people process climate grief. She’s turned her attention to helping folks process emotions having to do with the Covid-19 pandemic. I found this video message from her to be wise and calming. Her own sense of feeling called to slow down resonated with me deeply. My friends, I hope this finds you well. I am in Western Washington, one of the Covid-19 “hot spots” here in the U.S. We’re not on a lock-down basis yet, but schools and restaurants are closed and we’re strongly encouraged to stay home. With a 93-year-old mother living in an assisted living facility and being very near 65 myself, I am choosing to err on the side of caution. I am evaluating whether to see clients on a week by week basis (not this week) and staying out of public places unless absolutely necessary. I’m doing this primarily out of concern for others, especially the medically vulnerable, and out of love and respect for the medical heroes who are going to bear much of the brunt of this epidemic.
I have a large garden and spring is on its way, so I’m not lacking for beauty to fill my eyes and things to occupy my time while I’m at home, but it’s still weird, and I worry about my loved ones. My mother and her friends. My educator brother with asthma. My friends in healthcare. My flight attendant cousin. My friend who runs a popular health-foods store. And so on.
You, my readers, are from many parts of the world and all across the U.S. I know that circumstances are different for us depending on where we are. Your body is not a machine. Its processes are not at their core physical, mechanical, or chemical. A living being is a field of energy, consciousness, and intelligence, and is capable of amazing healing and renewal. Transformation is always accessible.

A lot of the people coming through my doors these days are saying they are very tired, with no obvious reasons. My sense is that it has partly to do with what’s happening in the macrocosm. Dark and chaotic energies are swirling, and they take a toll on people who are energetically sensitive.
I have an energy healing exercise to offer that I think may help.
But before I give you that, I want to clarify that I don’t think our times are without hope. Hope abounds, although perhaps needing to be paired with patience and perseverance. Like winter always holds the potential of spring, dark times hold the potential for greater light and good.
Nevertheless, when we’re in the middle of dark times, they can be unsettling and exhausting. So here’s a brief energy healing you can do for yourself, while in the process helping others.
In stormy times, I recommend that you do this energy healing regularly. It will benefit you as well as others.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it seems timely to address the issue of Love — in this case, self-love.
Loving yourself is one of the foundations of being able to love and be loved by others. It’s also one of the hallmarks of a well-developed heart chakra, and one of the pre-requisites for true happiness.
Yet for most people, it’s hard to do. In developing the heart chakra, it seems to be one of the most difficult achievements. It’s so much easier to be compassionate, kind, and non-judgmental to others.
All too often, we think and say terrible things about ourselves. It’s so ingrained that we barely notice the steady stream of insults and judgments that many of us lay on ourselves — things we would never think about others, especially those we love.
For the heart chakra to fully develop, and for us to fully receive the deep, true love that we all want, we must love ourselves.
This doesn’t mean that you don’t see your own imperfections. It just means that you love and accept yourself anyway. Easier said than done if you’ve been unconsciously judging yourself for a life-time.
But it’s just a habitual way of thinking, and all habits can be undone. With persistence, you can learn to treat yourself with the loving-kindness that you probably show to most other people.

How’s your energy? Are you brimming with vitality? Is your life going fluidly and efficiently? Or are you overworked, exhausted, burnt out and running into lots of obstacles and blocks in your life?
In the Northern Hemisphere, February 2 was Imbolc, an ancient Celtic holiday marking the beginning of the beginning of spring. As with each of the seasons, there’s great wisdom encoded in it. Looking to nature, this season of earliest spring can teach us a lot about how to preserve physical vitality, maintain energetic balance, and make our lives run more smoothly. One of Imbolc’s main lessons is to do things when the time is right, and not before.
In earliest spring, the light is growing stronger and the earliest bulbs are starting to emerge. Personally, by this time I’m tired of winter and eager for the full delights of Spring — more light, more warmth, more growth. But it’s not here yet!
Patience is required: spring comes on its own timetable, not ours.
For the plants, there’s no prize for coming up early. Break dormancy too soon, and their cycle for the whole year will be off. They may even die in a late freeze. So they wait till a complex set of cues tells them the time is right to start growing again.
Our workaholic culture rewards work for work’s sake. Work is seen as an absolute virtue, and not working a vice. So many of us try harder and harder, working continuously, never resting.
Taking the plants’ lessons of patience and timing to heart — giving both work and non-work, action and inaction their due — can help us maintain our physical and energetic health.
This is partly because it builds cycles of rest into our lives, but it’s more than that. When we act prematurely, we run into obstacles at every turn. The universe just doesn’t seem to cooperate. Our energy is needlessly frittered away.
But if we wait till the right time, things go much easier. Doors open, people are eager to help, happy coincidences abound. Staying in rhythm with the universe, we preserve our own energy. It can remain smooth and flowing, rather than getting jagged and blocked. It’s fueled, rather than depleted.
This year, watch closely as late winter patiently changes into early spring. Cultivate the wisdom of the plants, incorporating judicious inaction into your life. You’ll be healthier, happier, and more effective.

Feeling stuck: it’s an uncomfortable feeling. You can’t seem to move forward in some important aspect of life, even though you desperately want to. It’s sooooooo frustrating.
Sometimes people come to see me because they’re feeling this way. They want to break their internal impasse and reclaim some feeling of control over their lives. Often, they hope I’ll have some technique to help them power through their stuckness. Usually, though, I find it more useful to help them step back and reframe the situation.
As an example, let’s say you’ve decided you want to change careers. Your mind knows the steps needed to do that: take some classes, do some informational interviews, rewrite your resume. But as much as you want that new career, you can’t make yourself start any of these tasks, and you’re really beating yourself up about it.
Energetically speaking, if you’re in this situation, you’re pushing, pushing, pushing–and overworking your third chakra in the process. What should you do?
First, stop, breathe, and take a step back. Then breathe some more, all the way into your belly. Belly breathing is restorative for your weary third chakra.
Just for a moment (at least) try to suspend self-criticism. There’s another way of looking at this:
Your internal deadlock isn’t coming from a character flaw. Such standoffs usually happen because there are two opposing forces within you, resisting each other to a stalemate. But the standstill makes no sense to you because you’re only aware of one of them–your desire for a career change.
The other force operates below the level of consciousness. It’s a benevolent power of great wisdom and love. It might be coming from any of your upper chakras, or even from an external power. For simplicity’s sake, we’ll call it the Higher Self.
In resisting your conscious plans, the Higher Self is trying to give you information about and protect your deeper well-being. Perhaps you’re overtired and need to rest before undertaking a huge project. Perhaps you have a child who is having difficulties and requires your full attention. Perhaps the career you’re contemplating isn’t really right for you.
Whatever the cause, the more stuck and frustrated you feel, the more information there is for you about what your heart and soul truly need. It’s a gold mine in disguise.
So instead of pushing more, stop pushing at all. It can be uncomfortable, especially if you’re a high-achieving type. But if trying to force change hasn’t been working, forcing it harder isn’t going to work either.
So try something different. Rest. Listen to the quiet whisperings of your Higher Self (a sixth chakra function). Be gentle and tender with yourself (fourth chakra!). Know that it’s OK to be still, to be patient. Like the plants in earliest spring, wait for the right time to show itself, the right path to open up. Breathe . . .
